A FAMILY were lucky to escape a fire on the back verandah of their West Haven home on Monday evening.
Fire and Rescue NSW personnel were called to the fire on Ringtail Close about 6pm. Station Commander Les King said two trucks from the Laurieton station arrived to find smoke coming out of the house’s ceiling.
“When we got there smoke was coming out of the vents in the middle of the roof,” station commander King said.
“We thought the whole roof was on fire.”
Fortunately the fire only burned the immediate area of the verandah around where it started. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but an issue with a gas cylinder is believed to be responsible.
“When the gas cylinder caught alight, it melted the hose so gas was pouring out and the roof and ceiling (of the verandah) caught alight,” station commander King said. Despite the minimal area affected – firies estimated it to be around three square metres – it still took nearly two hours to extinguish the blaze.
“We got there just in the nick of time,” he said. “A matter of a few minutes more and things would have been very different for everyone.” Nobody was injured.
